A collar or harness that is too loose can slip off, and one that is too tight can rub. Taking two minutes to measure your dog before ordering makes a real difference.
What you need
- A soft tape measure (or a piece of string and a ruler)
- A few treats to keep your dog relaxed
- Pen and paper
Measuring for a collar
Wrap the tape around the middle of your dog's neck, where a collar would normally sit. Add roughly two fingers of space so the collar is comfortable but cannot slip over the head. Compare that number with the neck range listed on the product page.
Measuring for a harness
- Chest: measure around the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs.
- Neck: measure around the base of the neck, where it meets the shoulders.
- Check both numbers. If your dog falls between two sizes, check the adjustment range or choose the larger size and tighten the straps.
Tips for a good fit
- Measure a standing dog, not a lying-down one.
- Dogs with thick coats may need a little extra room.
- Puppies grow quickly, so re-measure every few weeks.
- After fitting, you should be able to slide two fingers under any strap.
